His name is Dieter. He makes a big point of it -- his name rhymes with Peter and has nothing (well maybe quite a bit) to do with diets and dieters. This is a truly fun and humorous adventure, taut and suspenseful, even the adult reader will find entertainment in the many levels of parody and satire, while middle-grade kids will laugh at Dieter’s jokes and tremble at his adventures. As the story opens, Dieter Brunner heads for Corner Candy with his best buddy Jeff. On the way, they evade the bully, Karl Stein. At Corner Candy Dieter is given a special sour ball candy which secretly contains an alien Node. or brain-link. Outside, the boys get caught by Karl Stein,, and Dieter fast-talks their way out of trouble. More trouble awaits as Supreme Commander Queam recruits Dieter to help fight battles for his space-fleet against all enemies, foreign, or . . . alien. As a secret weapon, generating random numbers that result in surprises for Queam’s enemies, Dieter’s sensitivity to sugar products fuels his efforts, while Queam’s linkage device for Dieter’s brain leads the Commander into the dangerous perils of Node addiction. Dieter must fight for survival, learn the value of true friendship, and the importance of team work with both the aliens and his schoolmates (and at times he’s not too sure which is which).Whatever the result, Dieter has a knack for landing in deep trouble. Fortunately, he is clever, and can talk his way out of many threats, more or less. You just got to know some other challenge will pop up soon. It may or may not be helpful that mocking humor runs wild at times, even verging on out and out SATIRE. For one example, think about the slogan of the recovery group for sugar addicts, SUCRANON: "Together we can lick sugar!"One thing Dieter has trouble learning: Bullies are not known for possessing a great sense of humor. But sometimes he is saved because his jokes go right over most people’s heads. Look up, what’s that, a bird, a jet, or is it Dieter’s Brain flying into outer space once more? One thing he does learn: Solutions to problems sometimes don’t last. So I suspect that Dieter and his friends shall no doubt blast off to save strange civilizations and stranger aliens, and be heroes again.
